ACADEMIC CULTURE
Understand the UK University Grading System
In the UK, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees are graded using honours, letters, and percentages. When you finish your undergraduate degree, you can earn one of four honours qualifications.
· First-Class Honours (first) - A final mark of 70 per cent or higher.
· Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1) - A final mark of 60-69 per cent.
· Lower Second-Class Honours (2:2) - A final mark of 50-59 per cent.
· Third-Class Honours (3rd) - A final mark of 45-49. It is a pass.
· Sometimes, 40-44 per cent can be awarded an ordinary degree.
· Anything below 40 per cent is classified as “failed”.
For postgraduate degrees, the grading system is similar:
· Distinction – a final grade of 70-100 per cent.
· Merit – a final grade of 60-69 per cent.
· Pass – a final grade of 50-59 per cent.
· Fail – a final grade below 50 per cent.
